Dealer bust: the most important odds in blackjack
The dealer's up-card reveals a lot about their bust risk (standard rules, dealer stands on 17):
- 2 → busts ~35%.
- 3 → ~37%.
- 4 → ~40%.
- 5 → ~42% (the weakest card for the casino).
- 6 → ~42%.
- 7 → ~26%.
- 8 → ~24%.
- 9 → ~23%.
- 10 / face → ~21%.
- Ace → only ~17%.
This is why you play defensively against a 5 or 6 (let the dealer bust) and aggressively against 9, 10 or ace. It is the backbone of the blackjack strategy chart.
Your own bust risk
- Hard 11 or less → 0% bust.
- Hard 12 → 31%.
- Hard 13 → 39%.
- Hard 14 → 56%.
- Hard 15 → 58%.
- Hard 16 → 62%.
That is why hard 15 and 16 against a high dealer card are so painful – and why the chart sometimes says surrender.
The chance of a natural blackjack
The blackjack probability of getting a natural (ace + ten) from your first two cards is about 4.8% – roughly one hand in 21. Because it pays 3:2, the payout rule matters so much to the house edge. Calculation: 4/52 × 16/51 + 16/52 × 4/51 ≈ 4.83%. A best blackjack odds game keeps that 3:2 payout.

Blackjack probability of winning a hand
Per hand with perfect basic strategy (6D, S17): roughly 43% win, ~9% push, 48% loss. The small gap is partly offset by the 3:2 payout on a blackjack win. This is the honest blackjack probability of winning – close to a coin flip, tilted slightly to the house. Winning in blackjack over the long run therefore comes from rules and strategy, not from any single hand.
Odds of common blackjack events
- Natural blackjack → 4.83% per hand (~1 in 21).
- A starting pair → ~7.7%.
- Hard 20 (two tens) → ~9.4%.
- Dealer shows an ace → ~7.7%.
- Both you and the dealer get blackjack → ~0.23% (push).
Why streaks are an illusion
Cards have no memory, so "streaks" are just chance within chance. Over 21 hands, ~4.8% naturals is the expected value, but each hand is independent. That is why "due" systems fail. It changes only if you count cards – because without replacement, the shoe's odds shift with every card dealt.

Odds in practice
Put the odds to work every time you play blackjack. A blackjack game is a sequence of small probability bets, and the blackjack game rewards the player who knows them. When you play blackjack, a blackjack win on a natural pays 3:2, so every blackjack win from an ace-ten is worth more than an ordinary win. If the dealer gets a blackjack, your hand loses unless you push.
