Blackjack strategy means making, on every hand, the decision that wins the most money over time – or loses the least. Unlike roulette or slots, blackjack has a mathematically proven best move for every combination of your hand and the dealer's up-card. Why blackjack strategy exists at all
Many casino guides call the game "luck". Short term, that is true. Long term, blackjack is one of the most predictable games in the casino. The reason: your actions (hit, stand, double, split, surrender) change the probability that you win. In roulette or on slots you cannot influence that probability. In blackjack you can – which is exactly why a real blackjack strategy exists.
With perfect basic strategy, the house edge on a typical 6-deck game (S17, DAS) is about 0.49%. A player with no blackjack strategy easily gives up 2–4%. Over a few hours in the casino that is the difference between losing a few dollars and losing hundreds.
The four layers of blackjack strategy
- 1. Rules. Without the blackjack rules and the options hit, stand, double, split and surrender, no strategy applies. Every basic strategy chart assumes you know the game.
- 2. Basic strategy. The mathematically perfect play for each situation. It alone drops the house edge below 1%.
- 3. Odds. Understanding the blackjack odds – dealer bust rates, your bust risk, the chance of a blackjack – shows why the strategy charts look the way they do.
- 4. Advanced. Card counting can flip the edge in theory – but works almost only in a live casino, not in online blackjack.
Basic strategy: the foundation
Basic strategy is a table: rows are your hand, columns are the dealer's up-card, and each cell is the optimal move. The strategy charts change with the rules – whether the dealer hits soft 17 (H17) or stands (S17), whether double after split is allowed, and how many decks are in play. The hard rules of blackjack strategy (short version)
If you only memorize ten lines of basic strategy, make them these:
- Always split aces and eights.
- Never split tens or fives.
- Hard 11 vs dealer 2–10: double.
- Hard 10 vs dealer 2–9: double.
- Hard 12–16 vs dealer 2–6: stand (let the dealer bust).
- Hard 12–16 vs dealer 7–A: hit.
- Hard 17+: always stand.
- Soft 18 vs dealer 9/10/A: hit.

- 6:5 blackjack: leave the table.

What moves the house edge
The house edge is the casino's long-run advantage as a percentage of your bet. These levers move it the most in the game of blackjack:
- Blackjack pays 3:2 instead of 6:5 – the biggest lever. A 6:5 game costs you about 1.4% extra. Avoid 6:5 tables.
- S17 instead of H17 – if the dealer stands on soft 17, the edge drops about 0.2%.
- Fewer decks – single deck blackjack has the lowest base edge (beware 6:5 single-deck tables).
- Double after split and surrender allowed – both help the player.
- European blackjack (ENHC) – the dealer has no hole card, which slightly changes the play (see European blackjack).
